Supergoop! is launching a new advocacy platform to raise awareness of skin cancer – Project Black Dot. The brand’s founder, Holly Thaggard, along with its famous co-owner, tennis champ/model Maria Sharapova, intend to help raise awareness of the dangers of skin cancer, calling attention to current United States regulations on sunscreen use in schools. Thaggard explains, “Our goal at Supergoop! is for sun protection to be as recognized as a healthy habit…With Project Black Dot, Maria and I are excited to share our passion and help ignite the important conversation about skin cancer prevention while providing simple, convenient tools to help Americans embrace healthy sun protection habits.” Sharapova added, “Children experience nearly three times more UV exposure than adults, yet we are not supplying them with what they need to protect their skin at school.” The Goal Since the FDA regulates sunscreen as an over the counter drug (OTC), 47 states currently restrict public school children from openly carrying and applying sunscreen at school without a signed permission slip. Supergoop! is calling on parents to sign their children’s permission slips and start the dialogue around sunscreen use in school, with the goal of sending 100,000 sun safe students to school with signed sunscreen permission slips.
